+ DAILY PRAYER +

King David Weeps for Absalom And it was told to Joab that the king was weeping and he mourned over Absalom, so the victory turned to mourning on that day for all the army, because they had heard that day, “The king is grieving over his son.” The army ?came secretly? into the city on that day because the army was disgraced when they fled in the battle, and because the king had covered his face and cried with a loud voice, “My son, Absalom, Absalom, my son, my son.”…

This Daily Devotion covers the first five books of the Bible, Genesis through Deuteronomy also called the Books of Moses or the Pentateuch, in a period of one year in a Monday through Friday format, the Psalms and order of devotion follow those presented in The Treasury of Daily Prayer from Concordia Publishing House.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Hear my prayer, O Lord; give ear to my pleas for mercy!

In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!

Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan,

     and he hears my voice.

     Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you;

He will never permit the righteous to be moved.

Psalm 113

1  Praise the LORD!

Praise, O servants of the LORD,

praise the name of the LORD!

2  Blessed be the name of the LORD

from this time forth and forevermore!

3  From the rising of the sun to its setting,

the name of the LORD is to be praised!

4  The LORD is high above all nations,

and his glory above the heavens!

5  Who is like the LORD our God,

who is seated on high,

6  who looks far down

on the heavens and the earth?

7  He raises the poor from the dust

and lifts the needy from the ash heap,

8  to make them sit with princes,

with the princes of his people.

9  He gives the barren woman a home,

making her the joyous mother of children.

Praise the LORD!

King David Weeps for Absalom

19 And it was told to Joab that the king was weeping and he mourned over Absalom, so the victory turned to mourning on that day for all the army, because they had heard that day, “The king is grieving over his son.” The army ?came secretly? into the city on that day because the army was disgraced when they fled in the battle, and because the king had covered his face and cried with a loud voice, “My son, Absalom, Absalom, my son, my son.”

Then Joab came to the king’s house and said, “Today you have humiliated the faces of all of your servants who have saved your life this day, and the life of your sons and your daughters, the life of your wives, and the life of your concubines, by loving those who hate you and hating those who love you. Indeed, you have made clear this day that you have no regard for your commanders or officers, for I have realized today that were Absalom alive, and all of us were dead, then that would have been right in your eyes! So then, get up and go out and ?speak kindly to your servants?, for I swear by Yahweh, if you do not go out, no man will lodge this night with you, and this disaster will be greater for you than any disaster that has come upon you from your childhood until now!” So the king got up and he sat in the gate, and they told all the army, “Look, the king is sitting in the gate.” Then all the army came before the king; whereas all of Israel had fled, each to his tent.

Lord’s Prayer

Daily Prayer

Lord God, You made Your beloved Son, our Savior, subject to the Law and caused Him to shed His blood on our behalf.  Grant us the true circumcision of the Spirit that our hearts may be made pure from all sins; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Concluding Prayer

Heavenly Father, send Your Holy Spirit into our hearts to direct and rule us according to Your will, to comfort us in all our afflictions, to defend us from all error, and to lead us into all truth; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
