+ DAILY PRAYER +

This Daily Devotion covers the first five books of the Bible, Genesis through Deuteronomy also called the Books of Moses or the Pentateuch, in a period of one year in a Monday through Friday format, the Psalms and order of devotion follow those presented in The Treasury of Daily Prayer from Concordia Publishing House.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

     Hear my prayer, O Lord; give ear to my pleas for mercy!

     In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!

     Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan,

     and he hears my voice.

     Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you;

     He will never permit the righteous to be moved.

Psalm 146:5-9

5  Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,

whose hope is in the LORD his God,

6  who made heaven and earth, the sea,

and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever;

7  who executes justice for the oppressed,

who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free;

8  the LORD opens the eyes of the blind.

The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down;

the LORD loves the righteous.

9  The LORD watches over the sojourners;

he upholds the widow and the fatherless,

but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

Reading Num 26:1-20

A New Census

26  And it happened after the plague, Yahweh said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saying, ?Take a census? of the community of the ?Israelites? from ?those twenty years old? and above, according to ?their families?, all who are able to go out to war in Israel.” So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them on the desert-plateau of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, saying, Take a census of the community from ?those twenty years old? and above, just as Yahweh commanded Moses.”

The Israelites who went out from the land of Egypt were:

Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, the descendants of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites; of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites. These are the clans of the Reubenites, and the ones counted of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty. The children of Pallu: Eliab. The children of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the same Dathan and Abiram who were appointed of the community, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they rebelled against Yahweh, 10 and the land opened its mouth and swallowed them with Korah, when that company died, when the fire consumed two hundred and fifty men, and they were a sign. 11 The children of Korah, however, did not die.

12 The descendants of Simeon, according to their clans: of Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; of Jakin, the clan of the Jakinites; 13 of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites. 14 These were the clans of the Simeonites, twenty-two thousand two hundred.

15 The descendants of Gad according to their clans: of Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; of Shuni, the clan of the Shunites; 16 of Ozni, the clan of the Oznites; of Eri, the clan of the Erites; 17 of Arod, the clan of the Arodites; of Areli, the clan of the Arelites; 18 These were the clans of the descendants of Gad according to the ones counted of them, forty thousand five hundred.

19 The sons of Judah: Er and Onan; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. 20 The descendants of Judah according to their clans were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; of Perez, the clan of the Perezites; of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites.
